Wednesday, July 23, 2008: MySpace Members To Access OpenID

MySpace on Tuesday announced it will join the OpenID alliance.

The alliance would allow MySpace users to log on to other Web sites without registering. Users' personal information will be used to provide access to third-party sites, so members don't have to create several user names, passwords, and profiles.

"All this will tie together to make it more useful for MySpace users to have MySpace accounts even when they're not on MySpace. We hope you'll be able to take your MySpace friends wherever you go," Jim Benedetto, the social networking site's senior VP of technology, said in a statement. "We hope you'll be able to take your MySpace friends wherever you go," he said. Read More

Saturday, July 19, 2008: Last.fm gets a makeover, ventures into iPhone, living room

Music streaming and social community Last.fm has redesigned for a more mature experience, adding more integration and ubiquity across a variety of devices. Ars Technica put on some headphones and rocked out with some of the new features.

Now sporting a much more refined and organized layout, Last.fm is finally filling its shoes as part of CBS' transition to becoming an "audience company" and further extending its reach onto the web. The network purchased Last.fm in May 2007 for $280 million. Since then, Last.fm has introduced significant new features like music streaming from the four major labels—never mind that little squabble with Warner—and a music video initiative.

Last.fm became a bit more interesting some time ago with the introduction of a plug-in for various software like iTunes and Windows Media Player which "scrobbles" a list of the artists and songs you play up to your Last.fm account (not the files themselves). Combined with adding friends and the ability to purchase songs found on the sites at popular digital outlets like Amazon and iTunes Store, Last.fm has morphed into a convenient, free, one-stop social networking shop for exchanging music tastes, discovering new tracks, and keeping up with one's favorite artists. Read More

Wednesday, July 10, 2008: Pandora Brings Free Streaming Music to iPhone 3G

An app from online radio station Pandora will be among the hundreds of offerings available Friday when Apple officially unveils its long-awaited Apps Store alongside the iPhone 3G.

There's a decent chance that Pandora will be overlooked, at least initially, among the deluge of third-party apps being released (500 to be exact!), but based on the sneak preview of the offering, there's an awful lot to like about the Pandora's iPhone app.

The free Pandora service is now available via iTunes 7.7. It can be streamed over WiFi, EDGE, and 3G HSPA, and can be run on the first-generation iPhone, the iPhone 3G, and the iPod Touch, once the iPhone 2.0 software is made available.

Pandora has produced a step-by-step video about how to download and use its app.

Once they've downloaded the Pandora app, users can log in with their existing accounts to access stations created through the Web version of the program. Using the Touch and iPhone's touch screens, users can also create new stations directly from the devices, bookmark favorite songs, and purchase songs over the air using the iTunes WiFi store.

"We are thrilled to launch Pandora on the iPhone," Pandora founder Tim Westergren said in a statement. "The ability to offer a free, personalized streaming service on a mobile device marks an important new era for Internet radio. Apple's revolutionary product is the ideal platform for listeners to experience Pandora on-the-go." Read More

Wednesday, July 9, 2008: Evidence of moon water found

A new analysis of volcanic glass recovered from the moon decades ago found the rocks contain traces of the constituents of water, challenging a long-held notion that the moon is perfectly dry.

Using a technique that was not available when Apollo astronauts collected the minuscule rocks in the early 1970s, scientists were able to detect telltale signs of water trapped inside the pebble-like glass. Their discovery suggests that water was present deep within the moon when the pebbles were formed during violent lunar eruptions 3.3 billion to 3.6 billion years ago.

The analysis, published today in the journal Nature, may cause scientists to rethink theories on how the moon was formed. Read More
